front general store

brooklyn’s long-time vintage japanese destination

Long before Greenpoint became a hipster Japanese enclave, there was Front General Store. Since 2012, it’s been a fixture in DUMBO, and an anchor in the Brooklyn vintage scene. What started as a stall off the Brooklyn Flea has evolved to be a two part shop just a couple blocks from the bridge, and a destination that attracts locals and tourists with taste.

Last year, the space went through a full renovation, going from an intimate shop with wood and metal shelving and racks filling the space with unfinished industrial bones, to a much more spacious, minimalist space. The current space trades the vintage vibe for more of a gallery-like brightness with clear displays and less shuffling around to get through the racks. Easier to navigate, but a bit less of the treasure hunting charm. That said, the inventory remains elite: vintage denim, workwear, archival designer pieces, and, given its cult following, some FGS originals. There’s truly something for everyone: men, women, unisex accessories, homeware, and some souvenirs.
