open market

a colorful sandwich shop in the most bland building

LA is no stranger to an iykyk kind of spot but Open Market is definitely a testament to the fact that Angelenos will always find a way to something good. With its entrance tucked into a courtyard of a nondescript corporate looking building on Wilshire, calling the Parking Violation Bureau neighbor, it’s easy to drive past. But if you know, you know, and a few years in, the people definitely know.

Inside, you forget you’re in that bland building, with a well stocked wine shop on one side, and a bustling sandwich counter on the other. The colorful, playful branding plays well with its menu, which gives homage to LA streets in the form of excellent deli sandwiches. The sandwiches come in familiar forms, but with a flair: the Normandie leans into the city’s French dip tradition, but with the addition of ginger picked radish for some brightness. The Kenmore reworks a tuna melt into a Korean tuna salad with burdock root and perilla. And they always have some kind of special that is worth driving out for. If this place was anywhere but here, there’d be a line out the door. But somehow it feels right for it to be hidden in plain sight, like an apology to cheer up anyone at the Parking Violation Bureau. Not to mention they validate parking, a true gem for Ktown.
