østergro

rooftop farm to table in an intimate communal experience

Dining at ØsterGRO is an experience. To get to the rooftop farm where the greenhouse dining room sits, you first have to find it. Into a gravel courtyard behind a former car auction house, you’ll find a tight yellow spiral staircase that definitely gives more “fire escape” than “restaurant entrance.” Up five stories, you’ll finally reach a lush rooftop farm with panoramic views of Østerbro.

On the other side of the garden beds is a glasshouse with a large dining table, a beautiful setting for a beautiful meal. While you wait, you can order a drink and go say hi to the chickens.

Dinner is a multi course prix fixe affair that is paced leisurely, inviting you to chat up with the strangers you share a table with. The menu, which changes with the seasons, draws from local ingredients (much of which is grown on site). The dishes are creative, modern, with global influences and Copenhagen finesse. Somehow, despite being so close to the elements, it feels like the coziest dinner.

good to know

Go here for: a rooftop dinner during summer sunsets, a farm to table meal

Order this: the menu changes regularly but they are able to accommodate some dietary restrictions

Amount of time to spend: at least 2 hours for breakast and lunch, 3 hours for dinner, it’s a wonderfully slow dining experience

When to come: pre-book at least a week in advance for best availabilities. Breakfast and lunch are only served on weekends. Dinner has two seatings, one at 6:30pm and one at 8:30pm, and you should come at least 30 minutes early to enjoy the roof.

Getting here: about an 8 minute walk from Ryparken train station (B, Bx, F), or a 10 minute walk from Vibenshus Runddel metro station (M3)

Other things to note:

  • Meals are hosted in the glasshouse so meals are on rain or shine.
  • They host volunteer days on Tuesdays to work on the farm and get a vegetarian lunch.
  • The stairs are not accessible, but if you call up, you can get access to their industrial sized elevator.
