Patisserie Vanessa is exactly how you would picture a dreamy contemporary city patisserie, in France or otherwise. Stepping inside is stepping into Marseillaise owner Vanessa’s dream. It’s minimalist, as in a lofted space with double height ceilings, ample natural light and white walls and clean lines, a contrast from the historic row house exterior. And at the center of attention, a wrap around pastry case filled with perfectly lined treats in every color.
This bakery is known for La Charlotte. A delicate ladyfinger ring around decadent mousse, which comes in various flavors, each as pretty as the next. They come in an individual portion for everyday joy and a full size for larger celebrations. The pastry case is rounded out with other French classics: colorful macarons, cream filled choux, elegant caneles and très mignon bear shaped financiers. While the goods are decidedly French, the corner shop fits in well in the Upper East Side life, a bit slower and more refined than the mid and downtown antics. The perfect casual-chic setting to indulge in a peaceful pause with a little treat in the middle of the day.
