On a particularly picturesque corner of Vienna’s bustling shopping street Mariahilfer Strasse in the heart of Neubau, Hotel Motto is a refined reminder of early 20th century glamor and elegance. Housed in a beautifully renovated historic building that once was Hotel Kummer, Hotel Motto brings Parisian chic with a touch of Viennese modernism, creating a historic setting with a contemporary cosmopolitan pulse.

The overall feel of the property is like a lived-in lounge. Vintage pieces and rich fabrics and warm lighting add visual depth to the design. The rooms are bright and spacious with curated touches and dreamy windows overlooking the street. It feels like luxury with a point of view, comfortably new but anchored in the history of the space and the city. The hotel itself has all the amenities you need for a city stay. A fitness room and wellness space with a sauna and steam bath, and a partnership with nearby gyms and pilates studio for discounted access.

On the top floor is Chez Bernard, a French brasserie with a Viennese twist. Art filled walls and stunning vistas of the cityscape beyond, and atop the beautiful original stairway, a rooftop lounge shaded by tasseled umbrellas with panoramic views. And around the corner is Motto Brot, the bakery that supplies the hotel and is a bustling local favorite in the neighborhood with excellent bread, pastries, desserts and lunch fare.

good to know

Go here for: a design forward boutique hotel with a lovely rooftop, a girls trip, couples trip, it’s convenient enough to explore the city center and easily connected by public transport

Don’t miss: the associated bakery around the corner, it is an excellent spot for grab and go breakfast or a sit down outdoor lunch on a nice summer day

Amount of time to spend: perfect for a short stay, a weekend trip

When to come: Vienna is always beautiful but best to come in rooftop season, whether or not you’re staying at the hotel

Getting here: right around the corner from an entrance to Neubaugasse station (U3 line)

Other things to note:

  • For a little something different, consider booking one of the specially designed Art Deluxe rooms, specially designed with works from graffiti artist Sasha Knezevic, adding a bit of rebellion to the Parisian aesthetic.
  • The room key will also give you free access to Belvedere 21.
