rice & miso

a pint sized japanese cafe and lunch spot

Amid tree-lined blocks of pretty brownstones, insulated from the traffic of Atlantic Ave, is a little shop called Rice & Miso. The minimalist, counter serve eatery feels hidden in plain sight. A compact, bright space that serves up a tightly curated menu of Japanese dishes composed into modular bentos. Rice & Miso is focused on simplicity and quality, individual components that come together into a balanced meal guided by Japanese principles.

Founder Mika Hatsushima created Rice & Miso with a goal of bringing the tradition of family cooking with healthy, clean food made from quality ingredients. They serve up a selection of onigiri made with brown rice, which can be paired with a protein main (salmon, tofu or chicken) and fermented vegetable osozai (a rotation of cold Japanese side dishes like gomaae, hijiki, daikon slaw and wakame). Round it out with miso soup for a nourishing meal. They also serve tea from Kettl. Over the years, Rice & Miso has become a neighborhood staple, where you go for the perfect casual lunch that doesn’t weigh you down, whether it is enjoyed there, or taken to the park for a picnic, or even taken home for a desk lunch on a work from home day.
