weekenders coffee

a sanctuary for coffee lovers in a quiet machiya

Kyoto has a way of doing things that makes even the most quotidian rituals feel sacred. Weekenders Coffee embodies this Kyoto way. A visit to this quiet cafe feels like a small pilgrimage. A serene storefront in a traditional machiya tucked away from the street behind a small parking lot and under the dappled shade of slender trees. Every aspect of the cafe feels intentionally crafted to be a part of an uncompromising quality coffee experience. The low key ambience contributes to the reverence to the craft of coffee, from roast to brew to sip.

In a thriving third wave coffee scene in Kyoto, Weekenders has over the years become a mainstay. Founder Masahiro Kaneko is attributed to introducing the more bright and nuanced notes of lighter roasts to the Kyoto palate. Today, with a cafe and roastery, Weekenders continues to be a destination for coffee purists, where coffee is masterfully brewed from a humble bar is a gravitational pull, compelling patrons to pause for a cherished cup of coffee and just for a moment, forget about the rest of the world.

good to know

Go here for: a quiet, unrushed coffee break

Order this: purists go for the pourover, but their espresso based drinks are also pulled to perfection

Amount of time to spend: 30 minutes for a brief coffee stop, there’s not much seating for lingering but the fresh cups of coffee are meant to be savored in the present

When to come: early in the morning and weekdays are better, as it can get quite crowded in the afternoons and weekends

Getting here: the main cafe is a 10 minute walk from Karasuma-Oike Station (Karasuma and Tozai lines), use exit 5 for the closest walk. The Roastery is about a 10 minute walk from the Kiyomizu-Gojo station (Keihan line)

Other things to note:

  • English menu available.
  • There’s only coffee here, no food. And just a small bench and ledge outside, no tables.
