Let’s not bury the lede: Eastern Food Bazaar is one of the cheapest and most delicious meals you can have in Cape Town. There are a lot of incredible restaurants in this city, but sometimes you just need a no frills, styrofoam container filled with well-spiced comfort food. And Eastern Food Bazaar more than delivers. This bustling indoor food hall is a hub for flavors across the Asian continent. The collection of stalls specialize in a breadth of cuisines from Turkish shawarma to Indian dosas to Chinese Hakka fried noodles.
Housed in what once was the historic Wellington Fruit Growers Market, it now operates canteen-style with no frills fast food turning hungry people to well satiated people. The vibe is constant chaos. Hoards of people (locals, families, tourists alike), neon lights and highly efficient service loading up plates and trays and boxes of food at the various stalls. The central ordering counter has all the vendor menus listed up top, where you place and order and get a ticket to retrieve your food at the stall. It’s overwhelming but once you get oriented, you appreciate it as a lively setting for digging in to generous portions of comfort food before you continue on your way.

Order this: dosas, bunny chow, masala chicken with naan, shawarma with fries, biryani, order less than what you think you need, their portions are huge
Amount of time to spend: 20 minutes for takeaway (service is fast but lines can be long), 30-45 minutes to dine on premises (not the kind of place to linger)
When to come: avoid peak meal times for shorter lines, but honestly any time is a good time
