stora bageriet

an excellent contemporary bakery that continues the legacy of the historical bakery that once occupied the space

There’s no shortage of options for a little fika in central Stockholm, but Stora Bageriet makes a strong contender. The original Östermalm bakery is housed in one of the oldest industrial buildings still standing. The building has a history of baking over the centuries, and was home to Kronobageriet until the 1950s, which was colloquially called stora bageriet (the great bakery), inspiring the name of this contemporary bakery that has taken up the footprint.

Today, this bakery shares the building with the Museum of Performing Arts. The bakery itself is spacious, with a bustling kitchen turning out trays and trays of perfect pastries and breads and an indoor dining space. In the long summer days, they also have tables outside to enjoy the warm Swedish sun. They have all the classics, from well salted cinnamon buns to beautifully laminated pastries with seasonal fruit (winter citruses through summer berries) to braided saffron buns, and of course crusty loaves of sourdough bread. There’s porridge and yogurt bowls and classic French and Danish breakfast plates, and open faced toasts and demi baguette sandwiches for lunch. It’s a beloved bakery full of energy, frequented by regulars and delighting visitors who stumble in.
