coffee and canele, a perfect pairing

Kyoto is a city known for understated elegance, reverence to craft and tradition, and thoughtful design that seamlessly bridges the traditional and contemporary. Here is a cafe that embodies that spirit, the refined aesthetic that creates a comfortable atmosphere to center attention on the craft of coffee. The cafe is the brainchild of Junichi Yamaguchi, a celebrated barista and winner of the World Latte Art Championship, so you know every cup of coffee is poured with a commitment to quality. But it goes far beyond the latte art. The coffee beans are roasted in house, and they cater to the obsession that Japan has over caneles as the primary choice of pastry to pair. And whether you’re a coffee purist or one who loves the allure of a fancy flavored drink, Here does it all well.

There are two locations in Kyoto, one in the heart of central Nakagyo, which is modern and minimalist with light woods and artful plants, and another near Kiyomizu, which leans more traditional in aesthetic, matching the ancient streets leading up to the temple. It seems fitting that they opened a location in Tainan, a city with visible Japanese influence that is often compared to Kyoto in its demeanor.

good to know

Go here for: a solid cup of coffee any time of day

Order this: any espresso drink, and of course a canele

Amount of time to spend: 30 minutes to an hour for a nice coffee break

When to come: weekdays are best, generally not too crowded and easy to snag a table

Getting here:

  • Nakagyo: about a 5 minute walk from Karasuma Oike (Karasuma and Tozai lines), use exit 4 or 6 for the closest walk.
  • Kiyomizu: it’s pretty deep up the shopping streets so the closest station is 20 minutes away at Kiyomizu-Gojo (Keihan Main Line). But at least the walk is filled with things to look at!

Other things to note:

  • Soy and oat milk available, non-coffee drinks available too.
  • English available on the menu.
