In a city full of aesthetic dessert cafes, Nudake sets the bar for cool. It feels a bit reductive to call it simply a dessert cafe though. It is as much a style brand and art gallery. Unsurprising after all, it is from the same visionary minds behind Gentle Monster. It’s immersive, experiential, multi-sensory. Every bit as conceptual and captivating and audaciously creative as the eyewear and retail galleries.
The two locations in Seoul offer distinct cafe experiences. Stepping into the Haus Dosan flagship is quite literally being plunged into an art gallery. The main level hosts a pop up gallery space for their collaborations. Upstairs is Tamburins and Gentle Monster. Downstairs is Nudake. A gallery like space filled with art and a dramatic pastry display that cuts through the space. It’s dark, minimalist, punctuated by the perfect dessert creations that trick the eye in playful ways. Cool minimalist, industrial furnishings that make a clean backdrop for the obligatory dessert photoshoot.
The Sinsa location is a croissant themed playground. The plain looking building has a croissant duct taped like true art outside, and a pair of tres chic croissant door handles. The stark, minimalist space is home to giant croissants for the laminated pastry display, leading up to a plush dining space.
The desserts themselves are works of art, and treated as such. Laid out and labeled like beautiful objects in a gallery. ach dessert is a whimsical, often bizarre, masterpiece that challenges your perceptions of what food can be. ‘Micro’issants that fit in the palm. A head of cauliflower with asparagus spears poking through. Heirloom tomatoes made of jello. An elegant okra wearing pearls. The famous “peak” pastry of laminated charcoal black croissant spirals making a crown around a matcha cream.
Nudake embraces the unconventional, pushing boundaries with flavors and forms, at the forefront of aesthetic culinary innovation for the fashion loving population. It perfectly captures the city’s blend of high fashion, cutting-edge art, and unapologetic expression, inviting indulgence and feeding imagination.
