November began with, well, a tragedy. The weather get cooler, the days shorter, the branches more bare. Winter felt more looming, more present this year. And there’s a sense of hysterical urgency, the final weeks of freedom as we know it before it all comes crashing down. Frantic, amid the general seasonal frenzy leading up to the holidays.
And a countdown. For me, the last full week of work, and the final days of working for the year. A temporary light in the middle of what is surely to continue to be a dark tunnel.
Thanksgiving in the city will always be a good choice. And while I love a potluck friendsgiving, for the big night itself Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant is the way to do it. All of the flavors and courses and indulgence and connection without the preparation or the clean up. Or the lack of space for that matter.
Plus I got to have a couple of the home friendsgivings this year to scratch the itch too. Overcooking, overeating. Comfort food that is needed a little more this year.
Finally got around to decorating the mantle. No room for a tree, but a garland and a lot of command hooks did the trick. Finally a place to have all of my ornaments on display.
And on a sunny Sunday, drawn back upstate, back to Beacon. A mindless itinerary. Coffee on the way to the train, ride up, grab lunch, walk around the shops, a couple hours at Dia, sunset on the Hudson and then back in time for dinner in the city. As always, it was a healing escape, and beautiful in the autumn.
an end of year drop, and probably listened to luther a few too many times
the album I have had on repeat all fall, just a continuous soundtrack
in dark times sometimes you just need some comforting tv from simpler times
An obligatory annual walk down 5th Avenue. Perhaps the only time I care to brave the slow walking tourists and even more so, tolerate the crowds that descend upon the holiday markets. Kitschy foods that do well on Tiktok and Instagram. But nothing hits quite like gingerbread hot chocolate while walking through the city on a brisk November day.
