cafe mutton

the platonic ideal of an all day neighborhood restaurant

Cafe Mutton is the reason New Yorkers love to weekend upstate. It’s no wonder it has become a darling of the food media urban elite. It’s probably for the better that it is safely nestled in the Hudson Valley. If it was in the city, it would certainly be ruined by long waits and reservation wars.

It’s a cozy spot, filled with quirky art, simple furnishings and a peek into the kitchen where the magic happens. Comfort food in familiar forms but a little more refined, more worldly. But still as approachable as a local haunt. For the most part, it’s a daytime spot. Brunch service throughout the week, with a short menu that is meat-forward and evolves with the seasons. With punchy daily specials as well as signature staples, like a fried bologna sandwich and head cheese baguette and of course, the showstopping crepes with lacy edges in almost burnt butter. Once a week on Fridays, they also do dinner, with a new menu every week.
