If you were to just look at Comal Oculto at face value, you might think it’s a casual, quaint little cafe and eatery on a tree-lined street in a fairly quiet neighborhood. After all, the storefront is quite modest, and there’s not much square footage they’re working with. But then you dig a little deeper and realize that this is, yes casual and quaint but also a beloved restaurant that has garnered international fame among travelers, even earning Michelin Bib attention.
Comal Oculto is, to be sure, a tight knit restaurant. The dining space is basically just one large communal table outside the restaurant. The menu is also very tight, focusing on homey masa based classics like gorditas, tlacoyos and flautas plated up beautifully. Come hungry. Order a couple things to share, or the whole menu. Dig in, elbows touching with neighboring diners. And then be on your way, back into the pretty streets of San Miguel Chapultepec.

Go here for: brunch or lunch on a sunny day, a casual afternoon meal
Order this: the flautas, gordita, chilaquiles con chamorro, but honestly you can’t go wrong, the menu is short but full of hits
Amount of time to spend: 30-45 minutes, seating is limited so not a place to linger
When to come: weekdays and off meal hours are best, avoid weekend brunch hours which will have a guaranteed wait
