clark street bakery

one of the best bakeries in the city

Clark Street is one of those bakeries that does both bread and pastry well. What started as a passion project and has a decade of street cred as a vendor in Grand Central Market has blossomed into a few brick and mortar bakeries across the city, and a much larger wholesale footprint. In a city with many reputable bakeries that have grown up around the same time, Clark Street has cemented its place among the top.

From some of the best sourdough loaves in the city to excellent Swedish pastries (the cardamom buns and seasonal semlors are must haves), good coffee and good sandwiches, Clark Street is everything you want in a neighborhood bakery: an easy lunch spot, a quick coffee and treat break, a place to sit down on a sunny day. The food menu goes harder than it needs to (I mean, avocado toast, sure, but most cafes without sit down service wouldn’t offer a French omelette). The only real fault of Clark Street is that it closes at 3pm, so come early.

In 2022, the Clark Street team took over the historic 101 Coffee Shop in Hollywood and opened Clark Street Diner.

good to know

Go here for: any bread needs, a casual breakfast, a lunch sandwich

Order this: any of their Swedish buns (cardamom is excellent, but they also have cinnamon and vanilla if preferred), any of their laminated pastries, the country sourdough loaf, the California club sandwich or jambon beurre

Amount of time to spend: a few minutes for a pastry pick up, or longer for a sit down breakfast or lunch

When to come: any time, but be warned that the pastry selection dwindles as the day goes on

Parking:

  • Echo Park: given it is west of the 101, street parking is pretty easy to find
  • Larchmont: usually not too bad, you’ll have to try your luck on the meters on Larchmont, but people are coming and going all the time so likely to find a spot within a block or two.
  • Beverly Hills: there’s a small parking lot in the strip mall
  • Brentwood: there’s a bunch of metered parking right out front that usually isn’t too difficult

Other things to note:

  • Order ahead for pick up if you have specific pastries in mind.
  • There’s varied indoor and outdoor seating available in each location, and it is counter service.
