odette

perfect french pastries in the heart of cdmx

Mexico City has excellent bakeries, with excellent pastries. Excellent French pastries. Something about the French technique combined with the fresh local ingredients creates a simple, magical experience. What started in Odette’s kitchen back in 2016 (she was only 21 at the time) has grown into two brick and mortar bakeries in the city, each churning out hundreds of perfectly laminated pastries, crusty loaves of breads and effortlessly chic cakes throughout the day. And as popular as it has become, it still feels like a warm neighborhood bakery.

The shop itself is small but the open windows and outdoor tables spill into the street, with the sweet scent of butter and sugar wafting out as racks of fresh pastries are brought out. Experiencing the spread of goods is a challenging exercise in self control. You might be coming in for a pastry and coffee and end up leaving with a whole box of treats, but the indulgence pays off. Whether sweet or savory, viennoiserie or bread, cake or tart, the only wrong choice is to not order enough pastries.
