a showstopping sour and spicy dish from the mainland
Taiwan has dozens of spicy hot pot chain restaurants, at a range of price points and in a variety of formats. But the latest craze that has lines snaking around the building is kind of similar but a little different: large format spicy fish stew with customizable add ons. And you know we love a customizable format.
Diao Min specializes in a single dish: 酸菜魚 (shuan cai yu) aka pickled mustard greens (or as they aptly put it: Asian Sauerkraut) and fish stew with origins hailing from Chongqin. It packs a punch: spicy peppercorns and dried chili offer baseline heat, complemented by the sour briney pickled vegetables enveloping slices of flakey white fish with flavor. It’s a showstopper dish that comes in a large custom bowl in sizes of big and bigger (family-style is no joke). Everything else is either a side to the main or an add on. Since it comes pre-cooked, many of the add-ins are a one time deal (versus hot pot format where you can keep cooking to your heart’s desire), but the benefit is that it looks glorious and you can just focus on eating. Definitely order the youtiao (a crunchy yeasted cruller), double fried to perfection, offering a delicious crunch to add texture to the experience in a very indulgent bite.
Oh and don’t be alarmed with the servers shouting, it’s all a part of the experience.
